1n September 2009, 4 year-old Charlotte Crowson came home and complained of a sore ankle. A seemingly innocent swelling rapidly became worse; soon after Charlotte was diagnosed with cancer.
Charlotte had Ewings Sarcoma - a very aggressive and extremely rare form of bone cancer only really seen in older, adolescent males. Many of the doctors treating her at Alder Hey Hospital had never seen the condition - let alone in someone so young.
After being diagnosed, Charlotte underwent intense chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. However, her doctors were uncertain over the effectiveness of even this treatment – so in order to try and prevent the cancer spreading, her leg was amputated below the knee in March 2010.
Since October 2009, Charlotte’s (and her family’s) life has revolved around Chemotheraphy, recuperation and hospital stays, trying to ensure that the cancer had not spread and that the amputation and recovery has been a success.
